Random House
placed this prominent, full-page advertisement announcing their
recent (25 January 1934) publication of this, the first
authorized American edition of Ulysses in the Saturday
Review of Literature. “For those who are already
engrossed in the reading of Ulysses as well as those who hesitate
to begin it because that it is obscure,” a similar version
of “this clue to what all the critical fuss is all
about” was laid into copies of their first edition of
Ulysses. It was a guide to the storyline, the characters,
their Homeric counterparts, and included a map of Dublin that
traced the characters’ travels.
