Tulsa Race Riot of
1921 Archive -- Photographs
Collection 1989-004-5
The following digital images are a compilation of various sources
including the Tulsa Race Riot Photographs, the Maxine Wiandt Photographs
(courtesy of Al Brophy), and the Francis Schmidt Photographs. These
photographs are meant to provide a basic understanding of the events
that took place during and after the Tulsa Race Riot.
Each photo bears an identification number. Most photos have a
photo duplication negative available.
Titles listed in italics and quotes are taken from the actual photo
(i.e. "Scene during Tulsa Race Riot"). Titles in brackets
have been supplied by Special Collections.
Photos are described as:
- Postcards. These are prints that were made into
postcards (as was commonly done in the past).
- Photographic prints. These are photos printed from the
original negatives.
- Photographic reproduction. These are second or later
generation photographs, frequently made by scanning in a photograph;
or photographing another image, resulting in the creation of a new
negative. These are derivative works and less detailed than
Photographic prints.

"Captured Negroes on way to Convention Hall during Tulsa Race Riot,
June 1st, 1921"
A group of detainees are being marched past the corner of
2nd and Main under armed guard. The building in the background is
202 S. Main, on the southwest corner. Based on the
shadows of the building and the people, it is late morning. They
are heading east (or are turning to head east) on 2nd, so it is more likely that they are among those
being marched south towards McNulty Park than to be heading towards the
Convention Hall, which is several blocks north of this intersection.Donor: Anonymous

This photo is confusing since the Continental Supply Co. is at 19 S. Main,

Francis Schmidt Photographs |
| |
Francis Albert "Close the Gates of Mercy" Schmidt (December
3, 1885 - September 19, 1944) was football coach at Henry
Kendall College from 1915 until 1922 after the College had
become the University of Tulsa. He became Head Coach in
1919. After leaving Tulsa, he went onto Arkansas, Texas
Christian and Ohio State. At Ohio he won two Big Ten
Conference championships and was eventually inducted into
the College Football Hall of Fame.
Schmidt was an amateur photographer and the following
photos came from a collection of his scrapbooks in our
Collections. It is not clear whether Schmidt took any,
some or all of the following photos. The image ratios
of the photos (2.5:1; 5 shots), 1:1.52 (5 shots - 6x9), and
1:1.1.72 (1 shot) seem to suggest two or more cameras.
A 6x9 120 film camera held 6 shots.
