APA Style
The APA
Style guidelines are found in the Publication Manual of the
American Psychological Association, currently in its 5th edition (2001). A
copy is kept for your convenience at the McFarlin Library Reference Desk.
It may not be checked out, but should be used in the library.
Below is a brief guide to the most frequently used entries. Please
consult the Manual if you need additional help. The Nursing School's website has
an excellent "Tips for Avoiding
Mistakes When Following APA Guidelines".

NOTES:
Authors:
- Always use initials for an author's first and middle names.
- Cite all authors if there are six or less. If there are seven or more
then list the first six followed by "et al.".
Publication Date:
- For books and journals, give the copyright date of the work in
parenthesis.
- If no date is available, write n.d. in the
parenthesis.
Titles:
- Capitalize only the first word in book and article titles and subtitles as
well as any proper names that appear in them.
- For journals, give the full title in both upper and lower case letters.
- The titles of books and journals should always be italicized. If
you're using a typewriter instead of a word processor, then titles should be
underlined.
Place of Publication:
- Abbreviate the names of U.S. states and territories using the official
two-letter U.S. Postal Service codes.
Retrieval Information:
- For documents retrieved from the Web, provide the URL (Internet address)
at the end of the retrieval statement.
- If the item derives from a database (such as those on EBSCOhost, InfoTrac,
or FirstSearch) just give the name of the database; the URL is not necessary.
