American Slavery: A Composite Autobiography

Description:

Between 1936 and 1938, the WPA Federal Writers' Project hired field workers to collect the life histories of former slaves. Transcripts for 2,000 interviews, from seventeen states, were then compiled by the Library of Congress.

In 1972, George Rawick assembled the Library's collection -- over 10,000 typescript pages -- in The American Slave: A Composite Autobiography. In 1997, the collection was indexed by Howard Potts for A Comprehensive Name Index for The American Slave.

Now, the collection and the index are available together for the first time in an online, searchable database.
