Scope and Content: The Clyde Lowery ledgers are a small, ruled tally book and
four legal-sized ledger books containing financial records and
related notes on the operating expenses of Lowery's ranch located near Cedar
Vale, Kansas. Some entries record transactions between the Lowery ranch and the
adjacent Chapman-Barnard Ranch (located in Osage County, Oklahoma) which Lowery
at one time served as foreman.
Administrative/Biographical History: Clyde R.
Lowery (17 October 1896-3 December 1984) moved to Indian Territory from Missouri
in 1905. He was foreman of the Chapman-Barnard ranch before getting his
own ranch at Harrison township, section 21, near Cedar Vale, Kansas.

Provenance/Source of Acquisition: The Lowery ledgers were acquired by Ron Croff, a Sedan,
Kansas, saddle maker and leather worker, at Lowery's 1985 estate
sale. In October 1994, Croff passed them to James P. Ronda, H. G.
Barnard Professor of American History at the University of Tulsa,
with the understanding that they would be placed on deposit in
the library for scholarly use and for use by former ranch
associates.
