DeWitt Lipe-Cherokee Strip papers

Collection 1991-001

Dates:  1870-1913.

Extent:  (1 box).

Level of Description:  Item level.

Name of creator(s):  DeWitt Lipe.

Date of creation:  Undetermined.

Scope and Content:  Consists of autograph, autograph transcriptions, and typed letters and documents of DeWitt Lipe, Treasurer of the Cherokee Nation. In general, the papers relate to the Cherokee Nation's taxation and licensing requirements of Texas stockmen who grazed cattle on Indian lands west of the Arkansas River, known as the "Cherokee Strip," on their way to the Kansas stockyards. Until the early 1880s, cattle driven up the Chisholm and Texas trails by Kansas and Texas cattlemen, were grazed on lands leased from the Cherokee Nation before being taken to the Kansas railheads. The Cherokee Nation earned profits from these grazing leases until, for reasons unknown, the Commissioner of Indian Affairs ordered a halt to them.  Also included in the papers are various Acts and Resolutions relating to the welfare of the citizens of the Cherokee Nation.
